About DK Sessions

The Idea

It all started in about 2000 / 2001 when I was taking part in the running and organisation of Dropknee division within the Australian tour. After talking to most of the attending, nearly all of them spoke of the same problem. This being sent out to compete when the surf conditions were at their worst which continues to be the cause of the low competitor numbers at Dropknee tour events. So the idea came about to create an contest specifically for Dropknee riders where the competitors can select the best available surf conditions to compete in.

An Evolution of DK Sessions

In it's early stages DKS was run just as one event held at Port Macquarie. Over time competitor numbers increased which paved way for the creation of a second event in the DKS "tour". The very first sponsor of DKS Simon Luke, offered to host this event at Tiona Park, located just south of Port Macquarie. This unique coastal property now plays host to a number of DKS competitors all throughout the year.

Past Attendences

This event has had some of the most high profile Dropknee riders from around the globe attend. Some of the attendences worth mentioning are Matt Lackey, Mason Rose, Crispin Hughes, Dave Hubbard, Grant Molony and the attendences from last year Bud Miyamoto, Micah McMullin and Colin Black.

Interest from Older Riders

Since it's creation DKS has made an impression on the already present Dropknee community by giving older riders the oppurtunity to compete again. Aaron "Changa" Matthews, Adam / Ash Murray, Roberto Barbiero are just a few of the local older riders to have competed over the years.

Now & into The Future

Now in it's 8th year DKS has reached a stage where the involvement of some of bodyboarding's new companies want to get involved. Last year Turbo Bodyboards worked together with DKS and bought over Bud Miyamoto who took away the competition. This year Turbo and DKS will again be host to one of the world's best, if not the best, Dropknee riders ever: Paul Roach.
